Projected on a massive screen, the ChatGPT avatar led the service with a captivating voice that held the audience’s attention. Many attendees expressed appreciation for the meaningful and moving sermon, while others found the concept of AI in religion intriguing.

Fuerth’s service is not the first instance of AI in religion. In 2019, a Japanese Buddhist temple utilized AI for a virtual monk who answered questions about Buddhism. In 2020, a New York City Jewish congregation employed AI to create a virtual cantor to lead prayers.
