Google is testing a new artificial intelligence-powered search feature called Search Generative Experience (SGE), which uses artificial intelligence to provide long-form answers to your inquiries. It’s currently in a limited public trial phase; in order to take part you’ll need to sign up for Search Labs program.
Once registered, you’ll notice a “SGE” tab in your search results page. By clicking this tab, you’ll be able to use SGE’s AI engine to ask Google any question of your choosing – with its intelligent answering engine providing long-form answers featuring relevant sources.
Here’s an example of a question in SGE:
What is the capital of France?
SGE’s Answer: Paris is the capital of France. Situated within Ile-de-France region in Northern France, Paris is estimated to have an estimated population of 2,165,423 as of January 2020. A hub for art, fashion, gastronomy and culture, Paris remains one of the top tourist destinations worldwide.
SGE’s answer is more comprehensive and informative than traditional search results pages, featuring links to related sources so you can learn more about your topic of choice.
SGE is still under development, yet has the potential to completely revolutionize how we search. It’s an effective tool that will allow us to gain deeper insights into our world.
Here are a few pointers for using SGE:
- Provide detailed questions in a clear manner – the more precise you are, the easier SGE will understand what you’re after.
- Use natural language – SGE understands natural speech well enough so there’s no need for special keywords or syntax when communicating with SGE.
- Ask open-ended questions. SGE excels at answering open-ended inquiries; avoid asking yes/no questions that require simple yes or no answers.
- Be patient. SGE may take several seconds to return an answer.
SGE is an incredible new resource that can help us discover more of the world we live in; give it a try today and see for yourself how SGE could alter how you use search.
